Resettlement Focus – Scotland

This week’s WEA blog focusses on some of the things that those in transition and preparing to leave the Service in Scotland may find of interest.  It is the Resettlement Snapshot, kindly provided to us by the D/NRIO at Rosyth.  Please read on for information on WEA visits, activities by the OA in Scotland and England, and various events from a range of Companies such as Barclays, Tesla, Virgin Money and FDM, amongst others.

White Ensign Association (WEA) Visits – Dec 17
The WEA offers advice on financial matters including mortgages, investments, pensions and debt. Assistance is also available on job-finding and starting your own business. Information is available at www.whiteensign.co.uk. Alternatively, you can attend one of their presentations, held throughout the year at HMNB Clyde and MOD Caledonia. Officers Association Scotland (OA) Visit 7 Feb 18

OA Scotland will be visiting HMNB Clyde on the 7 Feb 18 to conduct one –to-one interviews with officers leaving or considering leaving the service. To book an appointment, call 0131 550 1581 or email; t.denovan@oascotland.org.uk.  The OA are also hosting an information evening on the 13 Dec at 5.30 at the Royal Scots Club, Edinburgh. Baillie Gifford, one of Scotland premier financial services organisations are currently advertising for Trainee Client Services Managers with a start date of mid-2018. Career Transition Partnership (CTP)

Employment Fairs. These fairs are an opportunity to network and meet prospective employers. The North West of England fair will take place on the 15 February 18 at AJ Bell Stadium in Salford M30 7EY. To book go to www.ctp.org.uk/events where you will also find details of fairs at other locations.

Employment Opportunities

Civil Nuclear Constabulary.  A series of open days have been organised as there is a recruitment drive for the Dounreay site. They will take place on the 2 Feb 18 at Dornoch Academy and the 10 Feb 18 at Wick High School. To book a place or for more info email martin.sinclair@cnc.pnn.police.uk.

Virgin Money.  The company have set up a Re Career programme for service leavers. While training there will also be the opportunity to study towards a level 3 qualification in Financial services. You will be paid £16,000 during the training programme and the training will take place in Gosforth Newcastle. The programme will start on the 5 Feb 18 and applications need to be forwarded to Donna.Farquarson@virginmoney.com by the 18 Dec17.

Army Cadet Force.  The Lowlands Reserve Force and Cadet Organisation have vacancies for a Cadet Executive Officer based in Broxburn, Head of Estates based in Glasgow and Head of Engagement also based in Glasgow. General Information. 

Tesla Recruitment Event. Teslas mission is to accelerate the worlds transition to sustainable energy. They are holding an insight and recruitment event on the 7 Dec 17 in Edinburgh. If you have an NVQ3 qualification and technical knowledge book your place by emailing; military@tesla.com

Stand Up Stirling. An Armed Forces and Veterans Career/ Networking Event will take place on the 14 Dec 17 from 6-9.30 pm at the Council Chambers Old View Stirling. To book a place please email; Cllr Flannagan on flannanganb@stirling.gov.uk.

Civilian Housing Options.  The Joint Service Housing Advice Office has produced an e-learning package to give info on all aspects of house purchase, social housing and renting. The package can be accessed through the Defence Learning Environment. The course is entitled Civilian Housing options under the Defence School of Specialist Warfare. 

Open University Disabled Veterans Scholarship Fund.   This innovative scheme is open to any disabled veteran injured in or due to service life. Eligible applicants may apply for a bursary of £3000, for each 60 credits of OU study, up to a maximum of £18,000 for up to 360 credits (for a full undergraduate degree). FDM Insight Evening. This event is being held on 20 Dec 17 at 1 West Region St, Glasgow G2 1RW from 1800-1900. If you are interested in a career in Project Management or IT, this is an ideal way to explore some of the opportunities that are available within these sectors. Project Firefly. If you are leaving the Service and apply to transfer to the Reserves before your discharge date, under Project Firefly, you could take advantage of the Seamless Transfer Scheme. Royal Navy Reserves Engineering Branch. This new branch within the Maritime Reserves is seeking ex regulars under the age of 57 years having previously served in the ME/WE/CIS specialisations. Entry is seamless transfer if currently serving or via the Careers Office if already released. Most personnel will resume their previous Rank/ Rate with corresponding RNR pay scale and if completing a voluntary commitment of 24 days could qualify for a tax free bounty of £1725. You will be attached to your local RNR unit but will be employed in one of the 3 main Naval Port areas providing engineering resource linked to your expertise and experience. Many civilian employers support the Reserve Forces and provide special leave for RNR activities.
